Judges:
The Honorable Donald L. Allen Jr. and Honorable Thomas P. Boyd serve as the Justices of the 55th Judicial District Court. Honorable Thomas P. Boyd currently resides as the Court’s Chief Judge.
Operations:
The 55th Judicial District Court has jurisdiction in Ingham County, excluding the cities of Lansing and East Lansing. The District Court is separated into three divisions that all specialize in handling different types of cases: civil, criminal, and Traffic. The responsibilities of each division are outlined below.
Civil Division
All filings for general civil claims, not exceeding $25,000, landlord and tenant evictions, small claims less than or equal to $5,000, land contract forfeiture, claim and delivery actions, and weddings are handled within the Civil Division of the District Court.
Criminal Division
Maintains original jurisdiction over criminal cases involving a felony and District court misdemeanors such as Operating While Intoxicated, Assault and Battery, Domestic Violence and Possession of Marijuana. The Criminal Division is also responsible for criminal appellate assignments and appointments for indigent criminal defendants who necessitate court-appointed counsel.
Traffic Division
The law enforcement agencies of Ingham County give their traffic and municipal civil infraction citations to the Traffic Division of the District Court to be processed.
